16kai (16开) is a homeware studio established in Jingdezhen, China, in 2017, known for its unique eggshell glazing, which offers a matte finish and a refined tactile experience. The studio’s signature colors are pure and vibrant, with the distinctive blue cup showcasing a specialized glazing technique. This technique combines the classic blue-and-white porcelain (Qinghua) color, derived from cobalt oxide pigments, with a compound eggshell-colored glaze. The blue patterns emerge through a traditional high-temperature firing process, characteristic of Qinghua ceramics. The ultra-thin, translucent eggshell glaze, layered with a subtle tint, creates a refined, silky surface that enhances both visual and tactile appeal.
As an established studio, 16kai produces its products using slip casting with porcelain fired at high temperatures. Each piece is carefully hand-trimmed and glazed to perfection. The silver-glazed items are meticulously hand-painted by skilled craftsmen and undergo three separate applications and firings, ensuring exceptional finishing and durability, making them ideal for daily use.
